Neck Pain
Neck pain can arrive suddenly and sometimes disappear just as quickly without any intervention.
However, sometimes a nerve can become compressed or irritated, leading to significant pain, headaches, and other discomfort. This can result from age-related ‘wear and tear’, as well as other causes including traumatic events such as road accidents or sporting injuries. In some cases, neck pain may develop gradually, possibly linked to poor posture, or an overuse injury such as excessive DIY.
The pain can manifest on either or both sides of the neck, at the base of your skull, and down into your shoulders. It may be sharp, dull, or stiff, and may radiate to other areas, such as the arm or head. If the pain persists or intensifies over a couple of days, then seeking professional advice is advised.
Can Neck Problems Trigger Headaches?
Certain headaches have been linked to neck injuries and tension. Cervicogenic headaches, for example, can stem from cervical spine issues (e.g. facet joint syndrome), tension within the neck’s soft tissues, and possibly wear of the discs in the neck, a condition known as cervical spondylosis.
This type of headache is often associated with reduced neck movement, pain with certain movements, or when pressure is applied to specific areas of your neck.
The headaches may be one-sided and radiate from the neck/back of the head up to the front of the head or behind the eye. You may or may not also experience neck pain.
