Sports & Musculoskeletal Consultant

Our expert clinical team at Acer House Practice includes our own resident Sports & Musculoskeletal Consultant, Dr Natasha Beach.

Sports & Musculoskeletal Consultants are medically trained doctors specialising in diagnosing and managing non-surgical musculoskeletal and medical problems.

Once Dr Beach has diagnosed a problem and any underlying issues, she will recommend the best treatment with the most appropriate clinician to manage the condition, including other expert medical intervention such as injections or surgery, if required.

While Sports & Musculoskeletal Consultants work independently of other clinicians such as orthopaedic surgeons and physiotherapists, they can refer patients to them as required.

Areas of Specialist Expertise

Sports & Musculoskeletal Consultants specialise in assessing and diagnosing a wide range of sporting and non-sporting conditions including:

  • Low back pain, including disc prolapse, facet joint syndrome, nerve impingement, and sciatica
  • Tension headaches, migraines, concussion
  • Hip impingement, inguinal pain, and hernias
  • Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis
  • Traumatic injuries – such as fractures, ligament tears and ruptures
  • Muscle strains or chronic pains
  • Tendon injuries, including tendinopathy/tendonitis
  • Screening or referrals for other issues such as rheumatological, neurological, gastro-intestinal, cardiovascular, oncological conditions as well as post-operative check-up.

Dr Beach offers very specialist expertise

In addition to treating many of our patients who have non-sporting injuries, Dr Beach offers very specialist expertise for those with sports injuries, having advised and helped some of the highest ranked sportspeople in the country.
She is the sports doctor for the Lawn Tennis Association and has worked with some of the UK’s top tennis players, as well as at Wimbledon.

She is the Chief Medical Officer for the Vitality Netball Super League and the Team GB Hockey, England Athletics doctor, as well as Medical Advisor for British Triathlon and UK Athletics’ endurance disciplines.

She has been the track side doctor for British Athletics and worked pitch side for Harlequins and Bristol Bears Rugby clubs.

She is also the head doctor for mass participation events such as the London Winter Run, half- and full marathons, and triathlons.

Her elite sporting experience has helped broaden and deepen our understanding of the complex demands that different sports can place on all athletes of all levels and abilities, allowing us to diagnose and treat sporting injuries correctly and effectively.

What to Expect from Your Appointment

At the first appointment, Dr Beach will take a detailed clinical history and then conduct in-depth assessment to diagnose the problem. As part of her investigations, she may carry out more advanced tests such scans at local hospitals and nearby specialist centres, urgent imaging, blood tests and other advance testing as required.

She will then give you a prognosis and recommend the best possible options for treatment and management. For example, treatment might include prescription medication, specialist injections, or surgery (Acer House Practice has an extensive network of trusted specialists to whom we can refer you).

She can also order repeat imaging to ensure healing is complete before clearing you for the next management phase, such as physiotherapy.
