Women’s Health
& Mummy MOT

Women’s health is a specialist area which relates to conditions primarily affecting the pelvis and the pelvic floor. Clinicians work with women through pregnancy, postnatally, through menopause and beyond. Clinicians use methods such as manual therapy, exercise prescription and wellbeing advice to ensure women can maintain active, healthy lifestyles.

COMMON
CONDITIONS TREATED:

Our women’s health specialists incorporate manual therapy techniques (such as massage or stretching) with exercise prescription and wellbeing advice to help women of all ages. Conditions commonly treated include:

  • Pelvic pain during pregnancy
  • Post-natal check and rehabilitation
  • Chronic pelvic pain
  • Diastasis recti (tummy gap)
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Pelvic organ prolapse
  • Post-operative rehabilitation and scar management

What to expect

A new patient consultation starts with a detailed case history. This is a great opportunity for the clinician to gain an insight into how the condition is affecting you and what your individual goals are for seeking their help. It also helps the clinician to begin formulating a plan which will then guide their clinical examination that follows. This may include the application of special musculoskeletal tests, assessment of functional movements and, if indicated, a pelvic floor examination. After the examination your clinician will explain the detailed findings to you as well as discuss the treatment options available before commencing therapy. This may include manual therapy treatment, exercises prescription as well as lifestyle and wellbeing advice.

If beneficial, our experienced practitioners will suggest and appoint other members of the multidisciplinary team to provide a comprehensive and integrated treatment plan for your condition. It may also be necessary to refer you for further investigations or for a specialist consultant opinion. Acer House Practice has developed trusted affiliations with external medical professionals, and we ensure that we refer to the respective experts when deemed appropriate.

Mummy MOT®

Many women report symptoms such as back pain, pelvic pain, stress incontinence, sexual dysfunction, tummy gap and prolapse following childbirth. These conditions are common and can often be treated successfully and should not be something you have to accept as part of having a baby.

A Mummy MOT is a specialist postnatal examination for women following both vaginal and C-section deliveries and can be conducted any time from 6 weeks onwards. It comprehensively assesses your recovery after childbirth, with particular focus on posture as well as pelvic floor and stomach muscle recovery. It may also include an assessment of episiotomy and C-section scars to ensure they are healing correctly.

Following the assessment, you will be provided with a written report as well as exercise and individualised advice on how to aid your recovery or return to exercise safely. If necessary, you may be offered follow up treatment in the form of a Women’s Health follow up appointment.

The 60-minute
consultation includes:

  • A thorough postural screen
  • Pelvic floor muscle assessment
  • Abdominal muscle examination to check for any separation
  • Screening for bladder, bowel, or sexual dysfunction
  • Education and advice on safe activities and bespoke rehabilitation exercises designed with your goals and lifestyle factors in mind
  • Written report on the findings of your assessment

Mum’s can have a Mummy MOT® at any time, even if their children are older. It can be useful to help with any problems that may have arisen following pregnancy and childbirth, no matter how long ago it was.
